Apple to Open NFC Access and Wallet Options in Europe Under EU Pressure

European Union pressures have forced Apple to take another step back: The company will now have to offer different Wallet options to users in Europe.

Due to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, a few months after being required to open the App Store on iPhone to third-party app stores, Apple has now committed to providing third-party developers access to core NFC functions.

With these functionalities, users in Europe will be able to choose from various wallets and payment methods in the region (Samsung Wallet, Google Wallet, and other similar apps). Additionally, Apple will allow these apps to be set as the default instead of Apple’s Wallet, assigned to the Side Button for quick access, and offer convenient features like Face ID authentication.

According to a statement by European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager, Apple was unfair in limiting NFC payments to the built-in option since “NFC technology was not developed by Apple. This is standardized technology and is available free of charge.”

Apple holds a significant position in the smart mobile device market and dominates the market for NFC functions and mobile wallets on iPhones. However, Apple has been refusing to grant rival wallet developers access to NFC technology on the iPhone, keeping its use exclusive to its own mobile wallet application.

After months of testing, Apple will now provide third-party mobile wallets with free access to NFC functionality. However, Apple will not open Secure Enclave to third parties. Instead, third-party solutions will use a “Main Device Card Emulation Mode,” which the European Commission states offers “an equivalent solution in terms of security and user experience.”

Third-party wallet apps will also be able to use double-clicking the side button and Face ID authentication. Moreover, Apple will allow users to choose their default iPhone Wallet.

Since these features must be available to iPhone users in Europe by July 25th, we can expect a software update to be released very soon.
