Apple is about to make a big surprise for iPhone users, the secret curtain has been lifted.

According to a new report on Bloomberg, Apple has resumed talks with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to support some artificial intelligence features coming to iOS 18.

Apple is also developing its own large language models to support some iOS 18 features, but according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, talks with OpenAI are focused on a “chatbot/search component.”

It is also reported that Apple has been in discussions with Google to license Gemini, Google’s AI-powered chatbot, for iOS 18. Bloomberg says these discussions are still ongoing, and because Apple has not made a final decision on which direction to go, things could go either way in terms of the technology used. Gurman says it is possible for Apple to ultimately license AI technology from both companies or neither.

Apple is set to unveil a big surprise for iPhone users, the secret veil has been lifted.

While the rest of Silicon Valley has plunged into the arms race of AI weaponry, Apple has remained relatively quiet on its AI efforts so far. However, it has dropped enough hints to show that it is preparing something. The newly released M3 MacBook Air, touted as the “world’s best consumer laptop for artificial intelligence,” hit the market last month, with reports indicating that Apple will start releasing AI-centric laptops and desktop computers later this year. Additionally, earlier this week, Apple released a series of open-source large language models designed to work locally on devices instead of in the cloud.

It’s still unclear how Apple’s AI features on iPhones and other devices will look. As everyone knows, AI is still unreliable and prone to fabricating responses. While new AI-powered devices like Humane Ai Pin face scrutiny, others like Rabbit R1 have yet to prove their worth.
