Artificial Intelligence Act Enters into Force in the European Union

The European Union’s new law aimed at regulating artificial intelligence applications has come into force.

The European Parliament has approved a significant piece of legislation called the “EU Artificial Intelligence Act,” marking a major milestone in AI regulation. Under this law, developers of generative AI will need to have their models reviewed before releasing them to the market. Social scoring systems will be prohibited, and the use of smart cameras with facial recognition in public spaces will be banned.

With this regulation, low-level AI applications such as spam filters or computer games will be permitted. However, bots will be required to operate with transparency in areas such as banking and airlines. High-risk AI applications, such as autonomous vehicles or robotic surgery, will be subject to strict controls.

The provisions, will be enforceable until 2026

Although the European Union introduced the first regulations in the field of artificial intelligence in 2020, this is the first time a law on the subject has passed through parliament. These changes will also impact AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini. The primary target of the law will initially be major AI technology producers.

While most provisions of the law will be fully enforceable by mid-2026, the use of AI for purposes such as biometric surveillance will be banned within as short as six months. Additionally, regulations prioritizing transparency will come into effect, addressing issues such as preventing the use of deepfakes and improving the communication quality of chatbots.

It seems that regulators are finally starting to catch up with the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.
