Gemini Goes Hands-Free with Headphones

Users will soon be able to access Google’s AI chatbot Gemini directly through their headphones. According to information shared by 9to5Google, evidence of this comes from code strings found in version 15.31 of the Google app. One of the lines reads, “Talk to Gemini on your headphones.”

Additionally, another line mentions Gemini notifications on headphones, stating, “Your new AI assistant on headphones.” Google uses the term “Bisto” in the code, a term first used by Google in 2017 to refer to a class of headphones that run Google Assistant.

This information indicates that Gemini AI will only be available on headphones and headsets that are integrated with Google Assistant. With this integration, users won’t have to use their phone to type a command; instead, they can access the AI chatbot hands-free.

Currently, even if Gemini is the default virtual assistant on a smartphone, saying “OK Google” while using headphones still activates Google Assistant. This potential integration will allow users to activate Gemini directly.

In fact, the idea of accessing Gemini through headphones first surfaced in February. At that time, a code string in the beta version indicated that the Gemini mobile app would become accessible on your headphones. It seems Google is continuing its efforts to position Gemini as an assistant.

Google’s next steps might include integrating Gemini with Spotify and the much-anticipated Pixel Buds Pro 2. The feature allowing access to Gemini through headphones could be announced just before the Made by Google event on August 13, hinting at the new features that will be unveiled. The Pixel 9 and Pixel Buds Pro 2 are also expected to be introduced at the event.
