Hacker Makes Consolation Payment to Person Who Lost $71 Million in Crypto

One of the biggest trap link attacks, which have been increasingly common in the cryptocurrency world recently, occurred last week, and an interesting refund came from the hacker.

On Friday, the individual who lost 1155 WBTC worth $71 million received a $14 million refund from the hacker who stole their assets. The hacker returned a total of 4676 ETH to the victimized crypto investor in installments.

What happened?

As it is known, traps prepared based on user carelessness have been increasing in the cryptocurrency world recently. In this example, the victim user wanted to send 1155 WBTC to an address they created themselves. Initially, the user sent 0.05 ETH to the address. This address appeared in the user’s transaction history. However, the hacker who followed this person created another similar address by making the beginning and end of the address the same.

By sending close to 0 ETH to the victim’s account, the hacker also entered their transaction history.

The fact that the beginning and end of addresses are usually visible in transaction histories caused confusion for the individual. As a result, this person actually sent all their WBTC to an address that looked very similar (but was not the same) to the one they sent 0.05 ETH to.

If this person had checked all the letters of the addresses, this situation would not have occurred. The operation conducted via copy/paste here resulted in a $71 million loss.
