Discover iOS 18’s New Feature: Recover Lost or Damaged Photos

iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia introduce a new Photos app feature designed to help users recover lost or damaged photos and videos.

iOS 18 adds a “Recovered” album to the Photos app

Apple reveals that this feature can detect and retrieve previously lost or damaged photos and videos, showcasing them in the new “Recovered” album within the Photos app. The new Recovered album will complement the existing “Recently Deleted” album.

Apple states that when you update to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS Sequoia, your device will automatically scan for recoverable photos and videos.

There are several scenarios where a photo or video might be lost or damaged, such as database corruption issues or improper saving to your photo library when a photo is taken. Third-party apps with permission to manage your Photos library can also contribute to content loss or damage.

The new “Recovered” album will only appear if there are lost or damaged photos on your device. To access the new “Recovered” album in the Photos app, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Scroll down and find Utilities.
  3. Tap on Recovered and pass Face ID/Touch ID authentication.
  4. Choose between permanently deleting or recovering the item.

The “Recovered” album will appear only if there are lost or damaged photos or videos on your device; otherwise, it will not be visible as an option. This feature follows the discovery of deleted photos due to database corruption issues in iOS 17.5.
