Quantum Computers Break Records: By a Factor of 100

A new quantum computer has garnered attention with performance that surpasses the previous record by a factor of 100.

Google’s quantum computer named Sycamore had previously been the world’s most powerful quantum computer. However, a new quantum computer has completely overshadowed this record and set a new pinnacle. What’s more, the new quantum computer consumes 30,000 times less power.

Computer engineers and scientists at Quantinuum conducted various experiments using the new 56-qubit H2-1 computer. These experiments involved running the device at different levels and with different qubits. The performance record of quantum computers was also shattered in these studies.

Error rates have also decreased.

Researchers tested a standard algorithm that reveals how susceptible qubits are to errors or how noisy (unclear, involving uncertainty) the results are to uncover the potential of the quantum computer.

Quantum computers can perform more operations through qubits and can also perform parallel processing. Traditional computers perform operations sequentially. Adding more qubits exponentially increases the machine’s potential. For example, adding 5 units to another 5 units does not result in 10 units of computational power but rather 25 units.

The point where quantum computers surpass traditional computers is termed “quantum supremacy.” Achieving this level of computational capacity requires a machine with 1 million qubits. The most powerful machines today have approximately 1000 qubits of computational power. This is due to their susceptibility to errors, with much of the processing power being used for error correction. The new quantum computer performed 35% of operations without errors.
