The Gemini update for Google Messages has started rolling out.

The integration update for Google’s AI assistant Gemini with Google Messages has begun widespread distribution.

Announced at Google’s I/O 2024 event, Gemini has been integrated into the Google Messages app and is being widely released to enhance users’ messaging experience.

The Gemini era in Google Messages has officially begun.

Gemini appears as a new chat assistant within the Google Messages app. When users want to start a new chat, Gemini will be the initial point of contact. After accepting certain terms, users are directed to a standard messaging interface. This interface includes emoji and gallery options but does not have a voice note sending feature.

Gemini allows users to create message drafts, brainstorm, plan events, and engage in fun conversations. Optimized specifically for Google Messages to provide more concise responses, users will interact with Gemini in one-on-one chats that cannot be added to other conversations.

Gemini can work integrally with extensions such as Workspace (e.g., Gmail), YouTube, and Google Maps. Users can provide feedback on a response by long-pressing to like or dislike, star, or forward the responses. Conversations occur over RCS (requiring an internet connection), but end-to-end encryption is not supported.

This feature, which has been available to beta users since March, can now be experienced by a wide user base except in the EEA (European Economic Area), the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and India.
