WHAT CAUSES UNDERARM SAGGING?
According to Matt Claes, a personal trainer at Weight Loss Made Possible, underarm fat results from the same reason fat accumulates in other areas of the body: taking in more energy (or calories) than the body uses.
Claes states, “Interestingly, individuals with the same amount of body fat can store fat in different areas.” He explains that while the waist and thighs are common areas for fat storage, regions like the underarms can also start to accumulate fat over time. He notes that where the body stores fat is often beyond a person’s control and is usually genetic.
IT COULD BE GENETIC
Mariana Santos, the owner and personal trainer at Brazily Fitness Inc., also says underarm fat results from the same causes that lead to fat accumulation in other parts of the body. “Underarm fat can be caused by a combination of genetics, lack of exercise, poor diet, and sometimes medical conditions,” she explains.
THE BEST EXERCISES TO GET RID OF UNDERARM SAGGING
Since underarm fat results from taking in more calories than the body uses, experts say the best way to get rid of underarm fat is to focus on overall fat loss. Claes recommends focusing on cardio exercises like running, cycling, and swimming. Additionally, he suggests performing strength training exercises that specifically target the arms to help tone them as fat is lost.

Both trainers emphasize that the key to any fat reduction is maintaining a calorie deficit. ‘The best way to achieve the goal of getting rid of underarm fat is to combine strength training and cardiovascular exercise, and make dietary changes to ensure you are eating at a calorie deficit, which will result in overall fat loss over time,’ says Santos, echoing Claes.
While cardio exercises help with overall weight loss (including reducing underarm fat), both personal trainers also recommend strength training exercises that specifically target this area. According to the experts, here are 3 exercises to try.
TRICEP DIPS
To perform tricep dips, grasp the edge of a weight bench, couch, or chair with your elbows bent at 90 degrees. Your feet should be hip-width apart, with your heels on the floor. Straighten your arms to lift your body. Then, lower yourself back to the starting position. Perform three sets of five to ten repetitions.
STAR REACH EXERCISE
While performing this exercise, keep your body upright. With your head looking up, reach out as if you are trying to catch an imaginary star in the sky. Perform three sets of 20 repetitions.
ELEPHANT EXERCISE
Open your legs shoulder-width apart. Assume a position where your body is parallel to the ground and extend your arms to the floor. Swing your arms from side to side. Repeat this movement 20 times.
